While combat is constantly an important factor in Dungeons and Dragons, it’s only half the battle. The ability to role-play is paramount to a group’s success. Enter the Mastermind. This roguish archetype is built not on their combat prowess, but the ability to exploit enemies.

This bad boy is proficient with disguises, forgery, and voice mimicry: everything you need for infiltration, distractions, and diversions. Additionally, among the rogues many Cunning Actions, they gain the ability to Help an ally, which gives them advantage on anything from skill checks to attack rolls, further augmenting party capabilities.

Insightful Manipulator though is where the Mastermind sets themselves apart. With this ability, the Mastermind can gage the mechanical capabilities of an enemy and provide that information to their party members, informing them of what weaknesses to best exploit.

Finally, a Mastermind can steel themselves from arcane manipulations, preventing magic from compelling them to tell the truth and even present false thoughts to confuse telepaths. The Mastermind isn’t interested in being the hero of the fight, but the one who ensures success from the shadows.
