Dungeons And Dragons 5e: How To Pick Your Class
4. Rogue
A master of stealth, intrigue, deception, and screwing the party over through a distinct lack of impulse control, the rogue has evolved from its humble beginning as a Thief in the early days of Dungeons and Dragons to its current incarnation.
High-fantasy’s equivalent of Batman, the rogue exists almost exclusively on its skills, with only the Arcane Trickster gaining any magical bonuses. As such, rogues gain massive boosts to skills, tools, and proficiencies that you’ll want to optimize based on your play style. The thief and assassin may want to become experts at Sleight of Hand, while the Swashbuckler may be more concerned with his Acrobatics, having a penchant for dueling.
What all rogues have in common is that deadly little gem known as sneak attack. Plan your combat strategies in order to get the Rogue advantage on his attack, or have an ally in melee range of an enemy, and they can add a massive spike of bonus damage on top of their attack.
Rogues are also ideal scouts, being incredibly good at sneaking, disarming traps, and opening locked doors that may otherwise inhibit the party’s progress. Should you prefer sticking yourself in the shadows and a blade in your enemy’s back, don’t miss out on the Rogue.
