Dungeons And Dragons: Ranking Every Official 5e Module Worst To Best

10. Dungeon Of The Mad Mage

Rise Of Tiamat
Wizards Of The Coast

This adventure picks up where Waterdeep: Dragon Heist leaves off. In the city of Waterdeep, there is a tavern known as the Yawning Portal. It contains an entrance to a giant dungeon known as Undermountain. The dungeon is controlled by the Mad Mage known as Halaster Blackcloak. This labyrinth is the subject of so much mystery and speculation that adventurers from far and wide are drawn to it.

While the story of the module does pick up where Waterdeep: Dragon Heist left off, there is very little crossover. Your party will not use any of their contacts in the city to help them. This module is all about the mega-dungeon that is Undermountain. Consisting of 23 levels and taking your players from level 5-20 this gargantuan undertaking is going to push your group to their limits.

While all the dungeons are varied and have different themes, its best to make sure that your players want to run this sort of campaign first. While there are a few plot hooks on different levels of the dungeons, there is actually very little reason for your players to be there. Your party will be entering to explore the dungeon and gain fame or wealth, not save a princess or stop an evil being. If your players want a real challenge though, Dungeon of the Mad Mage is a great choice.
