For the past decade or so, Nintendos relevance to gaming has been in flux. On one hand their handhelds are doing fairly well - although sales of the 3DS have declined from the heights the DS reached - and in the home console space, Nintendo has had an incredible success (some would say fluke) with the Wii, but an absolute bomb with the Wii U. With this kind of mixed success, its not that surprising that Nintendo isnt willing to have a live press conference at E3 - opting to take out some floorspace instead amongst the punters and smaller developers. But that doesnt mean the Nintendo press conference isnt worth watching. Nintendo is basically the crazy sitcom uncle, a character whose disconnect from reality provides much amusement to those who dont have to deal with it every day. Theres some entertainment value to seeing Nintendos press conference in that light, but it also provides context for the inevitable wave of Nintendo is doomed articles and forum threads. And who knows maybe Nintendo will pull a rabbit out of their hat that gets people talking positively about them again.
