As seems customary these days, Gears is receiving an 'HD upgrade' for the original trilogy coming later this year - but that's not where the really exciting stuff is. Instead, we finally got eyes on the next main instalment in the franchise - albeit one without Marcus Fenix and the traditional Delta squad. Understandably from the team behind Unreal Engine 4, the whole thing looked absolutely gorgeous in motion, with some really subtle and brilliant lighting effects creating a perfectly spooky haunted house vibe to the demo, before all hell broke loose and our new characters - the hero named 'JD' had to contend with a furious thunderstorm. Due to the nature of showcasing something to an audience of tens of thousands, there was a reliance on set-pieces and general standalone 'moments' that essentially require the player to run through a number of scripted sequences. However, the whole mood of the demo was a resoundingly horrifying one, and as it's been two years since the lacklustre Judgment, one of Microsoft's otherwise best-received franchises is being welcomed with opened arms. Gears will be coming in 2016, and looks to be going under the new name 'Gears 4'. What are you looking forward to most? Let us know in the comments!
