Despite being stellar titles in their own right, both of the new Tomb Raider games so far have underperformed, not helped by business decisions such as Square Enix signing an exclusivity deal with Microsoft for the second title, despite the franchise historically being associated with Playstation.

With a brand new developer and launching on all platforms at the same time though, the upcoming Shadow of the Tomb Raider could finally restore the franchise back to its former glory. There's a general apathy surrounding the series at the moment, but a grand unveiling on Sony's stage at E3 could go a long way in winning back estranged fans.

Associating the franchise with the Playstation brand - even if it's just through small nuggets of exclusive content - could get players interested again in Lara Croft's adventures, especially if the developers have been able to revamp the trilogy-capper in a big way.

Sony have embraced third-party partnerships, and securing one with one of gaming's most iconic characters would only cement their top spot in the industry.
