4. The Year Of Battle Royales
Thanks to PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds popularization of the genre and Fortnite's popularity having superseded the former's in just a few short months, it's safe to say that the battle royale gravy train shows no signs of pulling into the station just yet. When multi-billion dollar companies like Marvel see fit to loan one of their characters to such things, you know that every Tom, Dick & Harry is going to try their damndest to capitalize on the craze.
And so, enter EA, Activision, Ubisoft and every other gargantuan publisher that wants a piece of the money-seasoned pie. Battlefield, Halo and Call of Duty are all already heavily rumoured to be working on their own versions of the formula and there's little reason to believe the streak will end there.
If each major publisher doesn't announce their own take on the genre next month, either as a standalone experience or as a complimentary side mode, we'll eat these words.
