During Bethesda's mostly snooze-worthy conference, they admirably faced the criticism levelled against Fallout 76 head-on, pledging to bring the game up to the standard fans reasonably expect.

The first major step is a free downloadable update called Wastelanders, which will add NPC human characters to the wasteland complete with traditional dialogue trees, the absence of which proved hugely frustrating to fans at launch. No concrete release date for the update yet, but it's expected later in the year.

Also, the game will be getting its own 52-player Battle Royale mode called Nuclear Winter, with players competing to become the undisputed Overseer of Valut 51, while a ring of fire herds them all towards a central converging point.

Though the mode hasn't fully launched yet, it is currently available in "sneak peak" form.

And better still, if you're still on the fence, a free trial of Fallout 76 is available all this week, allowing players to sample the world for themselves and even give Nuclear Winter a whirl.
