E3 2019: 9 Last-Minute Rumours You NEED To Know

2. Nier 3

It was a miracle that a sequel to the original Nier was even made, never mind that it ended up being one of the best games of the entire generation. The quirky original gave way to a confident, tighter follow up that became a must-play title, paying off in dividends for publisher Square Enix, who took a huge risk on the project.

No matter how good it was though, the story's conclusion didn't exactly lend itself well to a sequel. Still, as is often the case, money is more important than logic, and following the news that the game sold over 4 million copies, it looks as though Square Enix is in the process of getting a third entry in the oddball franchise off the ground.

Back at the end of 2017, it was revealed that a follow up was in the planning stages, which makes a reveal at E3 pretty likely considering how far along in development that would put the project. Adding further fuel to the fire are recent forum postings suggesting that a third Nier could be one of Square's new game reveals (of which they don't currently have many of).

Yoko Taro has mentioned in the past that he wants to continue working with Platinum Games - and considering how fruitful the team-up was on Automata - it's a partnership Square probably doesn't want to let go of.
