E3: 9 Biggest Bombshells From Microsoft's Conference
6. Sunset Overdrive Is Insanely Cool In-Game
Talk about a great impression. If you had to pick the most purely entertaining game from the Xbox One press conference, you'd have to go with Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac is best known for their series of colorful and family friendly Rachet and Clank titles, and while it might not seem it, a lot of the lessons they learned from that series are present and accounted for in Sunset Overdrive. For starters? Personality. Like Rachet and Clank, Sunset Overdrive bursts with color and eccentric personalities, especially the host of the trailer who dropped an F-Bomb so exquisite it should be frozen and preserved for scientific study. For seconds the game was simply gorgeous to behold; when they talk about the idea of 'technical merit' and 'artistic merit' at end-of-year awards shows they usually point to the fluid animation and squishy gore effects, and a vertical slice of the demo's environment is a shining example of both. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foDEbAbOVZE It seems that the working within the limitations of a family-friendly franchise that couldn't use swearing or gore to be appealing have afforded Insomniac the tools required to tell a great story just for grown-ups. It's rare that a game tries to be cool actually feels it, and in the case of Sunset Overdrive and its mind-blowing bomb-drop of a playable demo.
