Elder Scrolls: 5 Things To Thank Oblivion For (And 5 That Sucked)

8. Good - Freedom

There are very few games that give you the freedom that Oblivion does. You want to go to that ruin you see, go ahead. Want to join a guild of amoral assassins, sure. Just want to be a thief who’s calling card is that he’s always in his underpants, a bit strange but yes why not.

There is a main quest to Oblivion, quite a good one too, but that’s not what everyone remembers about it. People remember the thieves guild, the dark brotherhood, helping two long lost brothers to once again reunite. The freedom in what you can do in this world is really up to you.

This freedom also extends into how you play your character as well. While the levelling system may be a bit archaic by today’s standards and suffer from a few issues, it allows you to play your character anyway that you want. The amount of customisation that is available in your Character, Background and class is really down to how creative you want to be.

Sure, you can be the hero of Kvatch or the head of the fighter’s guild, but maybe you want a bit less pressure. Why not next time try being a hunter for a while, tracking game through the forest. Or maybe a lone knight, travelling from settlement to settlement performing good deeds. It is really up to you.
