Yup, this is serious. While the next Elder Scrolls is likely to hone in on one locale - or perhaps even two - replicating the entirety of Tamriel isn't out of the realm of possibility; Bethesda's games do, after all, increase tenfold with each successive outing.
A game of this size isn't new to the studio either, with both Arena and Daggerfall boasting infinitely larger open worlds - though with the added caveat of there being less detail. With the next gen on the way, however, and with Bethesda gradually growing all of their open worlds since Oblivion, depicting Tamriel in its entirety isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility - even if it does sound a tad unrealistic.
At the very least, the prospect of seeing multiple territories in one Elder Scrolls title is sure to get fans very excited. And though the prospect of the next generation arriving sooner rather than later is likely to frustrate plenty of gamers, an Elder Scrolls title of the scale we've just been discussing could make the transition infinitely less painful.
