5. Don't: Repetitive Side Quests

The side missions that occur in open-world games can often be the breaking point between a great title and a mediocre one.

Approaching the story as and when you choose is a trend modern gaming has picked up on, and giving the player other options to pursue really helps player immersion. The Elder Scrolls games in the past have done an excellent job with this, adding proper attention to stories outside of the main narrative.

Although they've proven to have been successful before, it's still important to note that the side quests shouldn't become too repetitive. Take, for example, the Dark Brotherhood quests in Skyrim. This was a highlight of the game, featuring twists and turns that took the player by surprise, and - as all great side quests should - felt almost as important as the primary campaign.

However, once over the missions would continue, with the mundane repetition of procedurally generated assassination contracts that feature little to no narrative.

It is integral for Bethesda to be wary not to stray into this path again, the concept of an ever ongoing mission within a game seems like a great concept, but when they lack any depth, it rings hollow and puts a sour taste in players mouths.
