Elder Scrolls 6: 5 Things We Do Want To See (And 5 We Don't)

2. Do: A Compelling Narrative

All this discussion of side quests, factions, and world-building is integral to making a great open-world game. However, what does need to be focused on is creating a mainline story that makes the next instalment worth playing. The implementation of an ongoing linear quest helps to give a title direction, and the better this main story is, the more playable the game becomes.

We have seen great stories told in the Elder Scrolls world, ranging from small stake faction wars to grand world-ending plots. Oblivion and Skyrim adopted grandiose storytelling more than the previous titles, and in a modern gaming world, this is again what the focus should be. For the game to feel relevant and competitive, there should be a real threat and thus reason to fight for the land of Tamriel.

So long as the new main quest brings high stakes and something we haven't seen before, then Bethesda should do quite well. If they don't, then the title could ring hollow, so no pressure.
