Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Simple Fixes That Would Improve Everything

8. Allow Perk Reassignment - Within Reason

Skyrim's perk system was an impressive build on the progression system of its predecessor; 'Oblivion'. Taking a heavy lead from the successes of Bethesda's other mega franchise 'Fallout', the perks were introduced to offer a more simple and direct character progression. In basic terms, using each skill improves the character's proficiency with it and sees points added to the total skill the player has in that area. Rather than allocating the points themselves upon levelling up, players instead assigned specific perks which offered far more tangible rewards and improvements to those skills. It was a far more fluid and easily accessible system of levelling up; players would simply improve at the skills they used the most and so practice really did make perfect in Skyrim. With the caveat that there were limits to the amount of perks a character could get - meaning players couldn't simply plough through enemies and become a master of all trades - this meant the characters quickly moulded and grew to suit their controlling player's style. While extremely useful for players who plan their character builds in advance, this does leave some fall down for players who stumble between skills in the early hours of the game before settling into one mould. Blanket perk reassignment is a massive no-go, however granting players the opportunity to shift one or two of them through some quest or sacrifice could greatly enhance the length of that character's life for some players, without forcing them to start afresh with another build. What better feeling is there than witnessing the moment your perfect RPG build reaches its full potential right before your eyes? Glorious!
