Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Simple Fixes That Would Improve Everything

4. Add Variety To The Creature Battles

Remember how incredibly excited you got when you heard that Skryim was going to have dragons? How about how thrilling it was to finally get stuck into the game and finally face off against one of our culture's most revered mythical beasts, and the relief to survive the encounter and live to tell the tale? All awesome, but what about when you realised that every single dragon battle was basically a carbon copy of the last one. Yeah, that sucked... Given how heavily the game played upon your never-ending encounters with Alduin and the returning dragons, the battles became disappointingly formulaic before long. The recipe for success was always the same; chip away at the beast's health with ranged attacks while it was airborne and then hack all hell out of it once it dropped to the earth for good. Save for powering up a character's ranged attacks to the point where one strike could fell a dragon in mid-air, this literally never changed. Whether it be dragons or some other such mythical beast, the creature battles in Elder Scrolls VI simply have to be more varied. Even just a few separate behavioural patterns for the dragons in Skyrim could have kept players guessing for long enough in the combat for them not to realise all of the similarities too quickly. Having some dragons flee when their health got too low, for example, could have been a way to drag in a chase mechanic where players had to mount a horse and track the beast down would have offered some tasty relief from the otherwise tired recipe for a battle. With all of Bethesda's RPG experience, surely they could come up with a few more variables as well?
