Elder Scrolls VI: 10 Simple Fixes That Would Improve Everything

3. Keep Honing The Combat

Combat within the RPG genre has taken a turn toward the more action-orientated in recent years. The days of turn-based RPGs hitting consoles are mostly behind us, with the majority of these types bow being more suited to phones and other such mobile devices. The modern console RPG has mostly relied a lot more on 'hack and slash' button bashing combat, and Skyrim was no exception to this. One thing Skyrim did carry off well was tweaking Oblivion's combat just well enough to have the two back shoulder buttons relating to each of the character's hands. This meant that whatever was equipped to each hand was set off with simple presses of these buttons, and it became far easier to coordinate different combat styles with just a few rhythm changes. For all the improvement it made on the combat from its predecessor however, Skyrim's combat was still not quite polished enough for many of its players' liking. Using console controllers' shoulder buttons meant that players could repeat their strikes very quickly when needed, but the movements of their character quite often didn't match this. This lead to several strikes being missed and to opportunities to land certain attacks never materialising. This was far more of an issue with melee combat than with ranged, and so the game quite heavily favoured players who leaned towards magic or bow attacks over the swordsmen out there. Spending just a little more time honing this raw but functional control method would certainly improve the combat for Elder Scrolls VI, and that would definitely be a welcome improvement.
