The game that started it all, the original Resident Evil is one of the defining titles in the survival horror genre. As either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, you are thrust into the Spencer Mansion where you encounter the numerous creatures inside.

Resident Evil sets the formula for every RE game afterward. There are limited resources so players can't muscle their way out of scenarios and item management is a must. Because of the fixed perspective, every corner is carefully crafted to feel like enemies can come out at any time. Finally, the mood and atmosphere were well-done and the game is considered one of the scariest titles for the PlayStation.

Of course, nowadays, the graphics and control scheme have not aged the best and its voice acting is often ridiculed on the Internet. Its puzzles can also feel tedious and may lead to some unwanted backtracking.

Yet despite these minor gripes, it cannot be understated how influential Resident Evil is to the video game industry. Without it, the sequels never would have happened and the world would have missed out on one of the pioneers of survival horror.
