12. Resident Evil Zero
A prequel showing the fatal first steps of S.T.A.R.S, Resident Evil Zero followed Bravo Team member Rebecca Chambers, as she attempts to survive the dangers of the claustrophobic Ecliptic Express.
Teaming up with the escaped convict Billy Cohen, the two look to discover the true cause of the original T-Virus outbreak. Following on from the Resident Evil Remake in the same year, the grim atmosphere transfered effortlessly.
The same was true of its revealing story, focusing on James Marcus, the co-founder of the Umbrella Corporation. Zero is known for introducing the partner system, with the player being able to swap back and forth between Rebecca and Billy at will. This would eventually evolve into Resident Evil 5's cooperative
Not all of these c were improvement however; Capcom removed the storage lockers to give more emphasis to inventory management and cooperative play. Many players considered this a painful retraction as they were forced to constantly stop to trade and drop items between the two characters in the room they were in.
Released at the tail-end of the classic series, other fans also commented that the tank controls were starting to show their age. Despite these gripes, Zero still maintained the survival horror gameplay of the franchise at its most vivid and unnerving for the time.
