10. Resident Evil Revelations

Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City Nemesis
Capcom

After a test run with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Capcom set about making a fully fledged title for handheld devices. With the high popularity of the 3DS, 2012 saw the debut of Resident Evil: Revelations, which took place between Resident Evil 4 and 5.

Picking up the missing story gaps for Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, the game details their early operations under the B.S.A.A in the aftermath of Umbrella's collapse. This time around it's the bioterrorist organisation Il Vetro in the antagonist seat, aboard the cruise ship Queen Zenobia.

It's almost a re-run of the setting in Resident Evil Gaiden eleven years earlier, as Capcom worked to correct previous mistakes. For the most part, the limited resources and deadly enemies created a well realised horror atmosphere.

With Resident Evil 6 and Operation Racoon City falling by the wayside, Revelations was successful in returning the series to its survival horror roots mostly intact. The title still had its problems and when it eventually came to consoles, the graphics were heavily criticised.

But when it came to delivering a true RE experience, Revelations was the most committed and consistent effort of the bunch. Its success prompted Capcom to commission a sequel three years later.
