EVERY Resident Evil Game Ranked Worst To Best

2. Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City Nemesis
Capcom

After four mainline games of traditional zombies dominating the proceedings, Capcom's Resident Evil 4 set out to reinvent the franchise. A long development process ensued with several seperate identities.

Director Shinji Mikami and the team at Capcom Production Studio 4 knew that something had to change if the franchise was to stay relevant, so they decided to start over. What players received in January 2005 was a game that almost single-handedly changed the gaming industry forever. Drastically altering its perspective, combat and overall design, Resident Evil 4 delivered a new breed of survival horror and one of the most imitated titles ever released.

Smarter and meaner foes, an over-the-shoulder viewpoint, action-packed quick-time-events and an extended quest; all of these elements became mainstay ingredients in the AAA scene after the game's release, particularly in third-person shooters.

Free from the clutches of Umbrella, Leon's mission to rescue the president's daughter in rural Spain was jam-packed with memorable moments, intimidating bosses and intense pacing that kept players on their toes. Whether it was desperately trying to bring down the chainsaw wielding Dr Salvador or battling through a castle full of cultists, RE4 was always a thrill to play.

Audiences old and new flocked to the game in droves, and it still holds up to this day.
