Resident Evil 4 made a very serious run at the top spot for how it changed the gaming industry. But if we're looking at the franchise from a purely survival horror perspective, one that delivers true tension and scares, the Resident Evil Remake for the GameCube deserves the honour of best title in the franchise. With series creator Shinji Mikami returning to direct, the reimagined Resident Evil set the standard for how video game remakes should be.
A gigantic graphical leap, massive improvements to the story and voice work and meaningful gameplay additions all come together flawlessly.
Remixing the pacing and enemy design for its 2002 release, few players could forget the horrific crimson heads rising twice as strong as the regular zombies, nor the sadistic tale of Lisa Trevor lurking in an abandoned shed. Add to that the unrelenting dread that hung over the entire experience and you have one of the scariest games of all time.
RE: Remake is simply a masterpiece of horror entertainment; every element works to pull the player into its terrifying world and never let go. It was a standout debut for the franchise on Nintendo's system and would be re-released for countless other systems.
