19. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence

When Nintendo's DS first released in 2004, there was an initial rush to transfer older titles to the new, more powerful hardware. After Resident Evil: Gaiden struggled to replicate the atmosphere of the franchise, Capcom's next effort into the portable market saw them head back to the first game again.

Resident Evil: Deadly Silence brought a slew of new additions. Rebirth Mode reworked enemy placement, first-person-knife sequences made use of the DS stylus pen and several multiplayer modes allowed for quick and easy matches over LAN.

Managing to get the original Resident Evil running on a handheld system was certainly an impressive achievement for the time and the new modes added some replay value. There was a real effort to make a top-tier version you could play anywhere. The DS still had its limitations however, most notably with the sound; Deadly Silence certainly lived up to its name as the sound design took a hit.
