Resident Evil's multiplayer offerings have rarely made a strong impression, but there's one sideshow in the franchise that stands out as a unique experiment that stood out among the other online entries of its day.
Resident Evil: Outbreak. Casting players as Racoon City residents with varying skills, the task of escaping came down to both enemies in your way and the ticking clock of the infection counter. To enhance the survival experience, Capcom Production Studio One implemented a perma-death system which deleted player's save file. But by far the creepiest aspect of the game was seeing your cooperative partners pass on, then rise again as a member of the undead.
Across the five scenarios, the struggle of the survivors certainly piqued fan interest at first. Despite all these elements and strengths, Outbreak couldn't follow up on its potential. a lack of voice chat in favour of repetitive sound bytes was annoying enough, but European audiences were especially disappointed at the lack of online support, a crucial feature that forced them to take it as a single-player title.
