3. Haohmaru - Soulcalibur VI (PS4/PC/Xbox One)

This cocky samurai over Darth freakin’ Vader? How?

Samurai Shodown’s Haohmaru is more obscure than a lot of the characters I’ve listed so far, but the factor that makes him rank so highly is that Samurai Shodown and Soulcalibur are remarkably similar in theme and tone. Both are weapon based fighting games where attacks can deal a lot of damage.

He also fits in nicely with the world of Soulcalibur. He’s basically Mitsurugi but a drunken thug rather than an honourable samurai. His fighting style mixes the flashy special moves in Samurai Shodown with juggle combos and fierce strikes. Bandai Namco have a habit of making Capcom and SNK characters look and play well in Tekken 7, so it’s great to see the same is true with Haohmaru.

What tipped Haohmaru over the edge for me though is the shittalking between Haohmaru and Mitsurugi whenever they square off. It’s almost as if both had wanted this fight for decades.
