Fallout 4: 10 Biggest WTF Moments From The E3 Demo

2. The Combat Doesn't Look Terrible

The final trailer of Bethesda's E3 showcase was stuffed full of guns, guts and explosions; a veritable cavalcade of V.A.T.S, miniguns and pneumatically-powered melee attacks. The combat shown looked fluid and dynamic, weapon recoil moved and jolted more realistically than the unreadable swaying and dipping of the first-person shooting mechanics of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. There were even hit-markers. Third-person combat also looks to have been revamped, with useable crosshairs and more logical arcs for grenades that might make explosives a viable combat option. Animations look to have been greatly added to making for numerous additional creature and enemy combat moves and movements that promise to spice up encounters. In addition to that, enemies seem to recoil upon being shot, particularly weaker ones€”as one scene appears to confirm when it shows the player peppering a feral ghoul with machine-gun fire, the ghoul flailing and convulsing as each new round enters its body. The fact that this iteration of V.A.T.S only slows time rather than stopping it completely should also make for more hectic firefights, meaning that it should feature seamlessly alongside the less rusty freeform combat of the new game.
