Fallout 4: 10 Biggest WTF Moments From The E3 Demo
5. Fully Realised Base Construction
Fans have been praying for a more fully fleshed out housing mechanic in Fallout games since the clumsy, limited options allowed to players of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, where customising your in-game home was simply a matter of buying some packages of furniture that had almost no use to the building at all. At best, fans might have expected a mechanic like that of Skyrim's Hearthfire DLC, something that added a few more options and some functionality to in-game housing but that was far from revolutionary or player-driven. Instead, bethesda treated us to a promise-filled demo of base construction with flexible placement of items, a range of defensive instalments (in order to ward off attacks from pesky raiders), workshops for massively customisable weapons and armour and resources for travellers and traders to use while stopping by. The idea that you can make your base into an impenetrable fortress is always appealing, but the fact that you'll get to see your defences in action against attacking raiders makes it all the more enticing. Better still, being able to cultivate a small community with brahmin caravans and traders means that your settlement will seem more like a key location and less like a place to store all the cool guns and trinkets you can't be bothered to carry with you on your travels. Laser trips, flamethrowers, mortar stations, guard posts and a number of turrets were all featured and placeable with full player freedom: there's a lot of fun to be had with this mechanic.
