Fallout 4: 10 Essential Features It Must Have

7. A Brutal, Effective Melee System

One thing that Skyrim improved upon tenfold following Oblivion and Fallout was first-person melee combat - especially in Skyrim, thwacking away at an enemy only to be greeted by a slow-motion finisher ending in the cork-pop of a severed head flying off was one of that game's simple pleasures. In Fallout 3 using melee weapons to do anything other than finish off already-weakened enemies was just a mess of animation and positioning, instead of the life-or-death struggle for survival it should have been. Too often do you run out of ammunition only to essentially accept death by attempting to take your assailant on by hand - when what would have been far more rewarding would have been positioning yourself accordingly, waiting for them to reload and rushing in for a much-deserved kill. There are plenty videos out there showing that when a spiked fist connects with mutant-mush in slow-motion it's incredibly satisfying - it's just a shame these moments usually happened by accident. It's time to change that.
