Fallout 4: 12 Early Reactions You Need To Know

11. Combat Has Been Vastly Improved

Here's one aspect of Fallout that's been majorly tweaked and for the better, no less. Polygon even said "it was jarring to actually enjoy the gunplay in Fallout 4 after trudging through the controls in literally every other game Bethesda has made", and though they had problems with the melee combat, IGN commended the gunplay as feeling "more like a typical good-quality first-person shooter than the series ever has before." This sentiment was reflected in almost every major review, praising Bethesda for honing the combat beyond the clunkiness of previous games in the series, making it "an accomplished and enjoyable shooter" (PC Gamer) and by far the "most improved element" (Game Informer). Many also noted the refined V.A.T.S. system, which introduces an added urgency as it no longer stops time completely (merely reducing it to a slow crawl), but of course, still comes with the requisite gory explosions that everyone loves. Several critics stated, though, that the pure combat was so surprisingly good that they abandoned using V.A.T.S. altogether after a while.
