As enjoyable as the game is overall, an overwhelming majority of critics had complaints about how the game lays out options to the player via its user interface. Gamespot said that "surveying the world map can be a chore" due to limited functionality, and that cycling through weapons and items can be far more time-consuming than it needs to be. Polygon called the interface "too opaque", and PC Gamer complained about the crafting workship being "a bit fiddly to use...At one point, I had to fast-travel between multiple different settlements just to remember where I'd left the pocket watch that contained the gear I needed to build a water pump." Granted, with a world this large, coming up with navigation menus that encompass everything intuitive and succinctly is incredibly difficult: you need look no further than the recent Metal Gear Solid V, which also received some measure of flak for its cumbersome array of menus.
