Fallout's story has inarguably always taken a backseat to the thrill of adventure and discovery, to the point that it often feels like the player is writing their own experiential journey in the wasteland. That said, the consensus appears to be that Fallout 4's story is tops as far as the series is concerned, mustering up "the strongest writing it's ever managed" (Polygon) and "the best main story Bethesda has created" (PC Gamer). Though it seems to be agreed that the game rushes the player through the prologue sequence in order to get them out into the wasteland, many stated that the game's dramatic choices left them genuinely unsure of what to do, and without going into spoilers, found them more drawn into the narrative than ever before.
