The characters opening monologue viewable in the casting documents makes it clear that he/she is totally oblivious of everything that has happened during their cryo-sleep. In using this trope Bethesda have cleverly ensured that their NPCs have the freedom to explain even the most obvious things to the character without it sounding implausible.
