Fallout 4: 9 Ways You're Playing It Wrong

7. Know Your Companions' Individual Abilities

Although Bethesda has made a great deal of effort to humanise each and every one of its companions in Fallout 4, the series still features some characters that are way, way more interesting than others. As a result, out of everyone you can recruit in this newest release, you'll probably stick to a core group to switch in and out every so often. However, an essential part of the companion system in Fallout 4 is making the most of their unique abilities. For a time, I hadn't really paid attention to the fact that these characters even had individual skills, but once I found out, it completely changed the way I chose my partners in crime. For instance, I'm terrible at hacking terminals, but fortunately, Nick Valentine is amazing at it, and so whenever I find a particular interesting piece of kit locked behind a terminal, I'll drag old V-Man out of retirement for one last hacking job. Cait can do the same for locks if you point her at them, and Paladin Danse's final perk gives you increased damage towards Synths - something that's very handy in the second half of the game, depending on your allegiances. Of course you won't need these skills all the time, but knowing when and where to best utilise the abilities of your companions could open up doors (quite literally, in some cases) to aspects of Fallout that you might never have known existed otherwise.
