'Build it, and they will come', or so it goes, and for Fallout 4 that means you'll soon be onset by way too many NPCs and/or followers than you know what do with. Therefore, it's handy to know what each settler actually requires, as through the absence of more in-depth management menus or a top-down view for building, it's pretty hard to balance the books otherwise. As such, every settler assigned to a designated safe zone will take up one unit of food, and one water, alongside being able to tend six crops at once and manage three defence units. Handily, the latter two are contextual, so if you have a batch of crops in one place, targeting any of them and telling your settler to proceed will get monitoring as much as they can in the surrounding area, with the same being true of defensive capabilities.
