Fallout 5: 10 Biggest Items Fans NEED To See
6. Compelling Companions
One of the (many) things Obsidian got right about Fallout when making New Vegas was the companion system.
Boasting eight followers, players could choose to recruit whoever suited their gameplay style and group affiliations best. Not only that, but each companion came with a fleshed-out backstory and individual sidequests only available once the player had spent enough time with them.
Fallout 4 expanded on this, including adding the ability for companions to judge you for your choices throughout the wasteland, based on their personal morality.
Many of these are obvious, though. Commit a generous act? The majority of potential companions are going to like it.
However, the system is truly at its best when the companion's reaction tells you something more about their character, Paladin Danse's dislike towards the player for being nice to ghouls, for example, shows the prejudicial attitudes that had been drilled into him as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel.
Fallout 5 doesn't even really need to change much to get the companion system right, just make sure the protagonist can ally themselves with compelling characters similar to those seen in previous games.
