Fallout 76: 10 New Gameplay Details You Need To Know

8. No Permadeath

Fallout 76 Exploration
Bethesda

While Fallout 76 is riffing on the systems established in hardcore survival games like Rust and Dayz, it's opting to present a more "softcore" version of this experience. Consequently, there'll be no permadeath in the game, and while you will incur a penalty if you don't successfully defend your settlement or accidentally end up being killed by a band of raiders, it's not going to set you back too much progress.

This will no doubt be a relief for the majority of players, as while an online spin on the franchise could work, one where your character resets upon every death would rob the experience of the depth and character building the franchise is entirely based on.

This also means that PVP should be more enjoyable as well, as coming face to face with other unsavoury players won't result in all your progress being lost. Essentially, people won't be able to dick you out of too much of your time.

The way Bethesda are attempting to present a softcore version of the survival genre seemingly indicates that they're trying to not venture too far away from what makes Fallout, well, Fallout, merely mixing up the formula enough to make for a genuinely unique spinoff.
