Far Cry: Every Game Ranked Worst To Best
1. Far Cry 2
It was tough deciding whether or not Far Cry 3 or 2 deserved this top spot.
They're both quality titles, and the former is certainly a more polished, robust experience. That said, the latter's ambition, as well as its highs when firing on all cylinders, reaches a level of narrative and gameplay cohesion that none of the other entries in the series have ever quite matched.
A lot of key features were admittedly divisive at launch - the sloppy aiming, respawning enemies and, of course, regularly suffering from malaria in particular - but all of these elements worked together to create an intense gameplay loop of survival at all costs.
Likewise, a lot of the features that made Far Cry 3 so good were actually fleshed out here first. While they were rougher around the edges, the lack of accessibility fit perfectly with the game's punishing mentality. You can't tag enemies for a start, and it increases the risk-reward gameplay the whole campaign indulges so much in.
Far Cry 2 is a far less refined beast than the games that followed it, but the ambition at its heart more than makes up for any shortcomings.
