Far Cry: Every Game Ranked Worst To Best

7. Far Cry Primal

A noble experiment, after the fourth game delivered more of the same old, same old, Primal attempted to spin off the franchise in a radical new direction.

Attempting to capture some of the imagination and inspiration that made the wacky spin-off Blood Dragon such a hit, Primal took players back to 10,000 BC and dropped the automatic weapons that fourth release relied so heavily on. Instead, the game's arsenal was made up essentially of sticks and stones and spears and bows, supported by a surprisingly great melee combat system.

Unfortunately, while the setting and combat had changed drastically, the overall open-world formula didn't, and the game felt more or less like any other Far Cry but with a cool new paint job.

Still, this instalment did find success in its expanded focus on animals. Being able to hunt, recruit and pit the prehistoric wildlife against each other was one of the title's biggest strengths, and was what made Primal a spin-off worth picking up even if you had had enough of the series' copy-and-paste habits.
