Far Cry Primal: 8 Things We Learned From The Gameplay Footage

2. Combat Looks Very Familiar, But With Bows And Spears

Kudos to Ubisoft for not completely copping out and giving players prehistoric versions of grenade launchers and rockets. From what we've seen so far, there's not an explosion in sight, and the weaponry in the game consists of bows, clubs, spears, and - in place of grenades - bee bombs (they just couldn't resist throwing in something resembling an explosive, could they...) The idea of using primitive weaponry in Far Cry Primal is a solid one, and there are signs that the game will focus heavily on resource-collecting and crafting as a means of fine-tuning your weapons and giving them plenty of customisability to suit your play style. But something that's a little disconcerting about the footage is that the combat mechanics and animations look not just similar to, but pretty much identical to, those of Far Cry 4. W've seen players sprinting up to enemies at high speed and insta-killing them with melee attacks to the throat, stealthy bow kills, and animal tearing through enemy villages. Seeing as melee combat is evidently such a key part of the game, you'd have hoped that Ubisoft would've developed it to suit the gritty feel of the stone age. Perhaps some kind of stamina system, or dodging, blocking and counter-attacking mechanics? But no, it looks like combat mechanics in the game are the same old Far Cry but minus the modern weaponry - which seems like a missed opportunity. Still, it may yet surprise us.
