6. Final Fantasy IX
After Final Fantasy VII and VIII went a bit nuts with futuristic settings and industrial cities, Final Fantasy IX inserted the fantasy back into the series. Filled with monsters and suffering because of mysterious Mist, the war-torn world of Final Fantasy IX was slightly limited in terms of technology but offered perhaps one of the most inventive locales the series has ever seen. It's a firm favourite with many, but what probably swings this for you is your love of the Chocobo. Never before had the series gave us so much to do with our feathered friends; sure you could race and breed them in VII, but the Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest that spanned the entire map (and the entire game) remains a series highlight for me. Of course there was always the fact that the characters actually changed over time in this one. Zidane moved on from daggers to an epic double-bladed sword. Garnet sheared off her hair and became Dagger. Plus, Vivi. He's awesome, and there's no denying that. We'll just have to forget about Quina - what the hell was up with that? So if you love Final Fantasy IX, this tells me that you have a great affinity for massive yellow birds, love a versatile experience and take great pride in owning things using a midget with glowing yellow eyes and a silly hat. ...if you're listening Vivi, I love your hat. Please don't use Doomsday on me. If I'm gone by the next page, you know why.
