FIFA 14: 6 MORE Players Bought By A Guy Who Doesn't Know Football
5. Will Hughes
Pricetag: $6M, from Derby County Hughes as a member of Wolves is an interesting story, one that traces back to my original article on the topic of buying players as a relative idiot in the football world. Commenter Matt Hirons informed me of Hughes, calling him a "hidden treasure." That was good enough for me, so in the next transfer window I rushed off to pick up the young midfielder. Derby absolutely didn't want to sell him, either. He was young with plenty of potential, and they demanded a king's ransom for him - a risky play for me, because Wolves were still operating on a tight budget and I didn't bother to scout him at all. I was purely at the mercy of a reader's opinion and the opponent's demands for a transfer fee. I settled on $6M to land Hughes, who came to the club with a 64 rating and an estimated cash value of under $3M. I didn't feel good about it, but I committed to playing him in every game he could physically manage, coupling him with budding superstar Rhys McCabe at centre mid. In the time since he's become a star, worth nearly $10M and sitting at a 79 overall before his 23rd birthday. The purchase looks brilliant now, and it's all due to the faith I had in a reader.
