FIFA 14: 6 MORE Players Bought By A Guy Who Doesn't Know Football

5. Joel Matip

Pricetag: $4.5M + Bjorn Sigurdarson (ST), from FC Schalke 04 In their first run to the final of the Euro League, Wolves ran afoul of a dominant FC Schalke 04 side who were anchored in the backfield by Cameroonian defender Joel Matip. No matter what we tried, we simply couldn't break through his exceptional tackling and surprising speed. We went on to lose that game 1-0, and it was Matip who even added the goal on a header from a corner kick. When the final whistle blew I muttered a single curse, then said aloud: "I gotta have that guy." Over the course of the next three transfer windows I fought tooth and nail to pry him away from Schalke, who had no interest in my advances. On the third window's arrival though, Matip was in poor form and was almost out of contract. I approached with an offer of $4.5M in cash and young striker Bjorn Sigurdarson, who had grown into an elite talent, to which they agreed. Only Matip didn't want to leave Germany. Making $90,000 a week, he refused that amount and anything in its ballpark citing a desire to stay comfortable in the town where he currently played. It ended up with Wolves having to put down a weekly sum of $150,000 over five years to get him to come to the club. He's the highest paid member of the team, even higher than captain and fellow center back Danny Batth, but he's among the best in the game and still in his mid-20s, so it seems a fair price to pay.
