There are now so many different ways to take free kicks on FIFA, it would take an age to explain them all. Luckily, the helpful folks at EuroGamer.net have written a very handy set piece guide, including every type of free kick, the required attributes of the taker in question, and the input needed in order to achieve the specific result.

One particularly new method of striking the ball is the 'trivela' free kick, named after the Spanish term for 'curve'. This sees the player strike the ball with the outside of his foot, (hopefully) curling it around the outside of the wall and into the top corner of the near post, catching the goalkeeper by surprise. It sounds like an effective tool if mastered, but there are more than enough different methods to keep things unpredictable from such situations.
