One could scarcely believe, but there was once a time when Luka Modric was maligned and written off as a flop. Having been ensnared from Spurs in 2012, the Croatian playmaker found it difficult to adjust to his new superior surroundings and was subsequently voted one of the worst signings of the season alongside fellow North London arrival Alex Song.

"This is Real Madrid" Modric would say in response, "I understand there is great pressure for new signings to succeed here. I'm not making excuses, I am not that kind of person, but it is very challenging to adapt to life at a big club like Madrid. I believe that I can prove I have something to offer." In the years since he surely has.

Where he once teetered on the edge of being shoved out of the club, Modric's class and determination to succeed won through, and the Croatian has been one of the club's stand-out performers over the last number of years.

After a tentative inaugural season at the club, he was an integral part of both Champions League victories, and the Croatian is currently deployed at the heart of the Madrid midfield.
