FIFA 19: 10 Things EA Should Steal From PES
8. Set Piece Control
Free kicks (and set pieces in general) have become a tad haphazard in FIFA over the past few years. There was a sweet spot several years ago, but it's been replaced by an altogether more random system that seems to favour scripting. (More on that later.)
Having way more control over where the ball actually goes is a must in FIFA 19. There's no excuse when PES 2018 managed to find a balance between every kick flying into the top corner and careening off a defender holding his nuts in the wall. That balancing act between risk and reward is the way it should be.
Corners are similarly fiddly. In PES, the tactical tweaks for set pieces actually seem to make a difference to what happens with each individual play. That's not the case in FIFA though, and it's endlessly frustrating to set up a near post run only for the overpowered goalie CPU to jump like he has springs for legs and snatch the ball out of mid-air every time.
This needs sorting out.
