FIFA 23 Review: 8 Ups & 6 Downs

5. Commentary

FIFA 23
EA Sports

Remember the glory days when FIFA had two different commentary teams to pick from? It was a genius move to include player choice, especially upon realising that the new Derek Rae and Lee Dixon partnership would tackle Champions League/Europa League matches and leave domestic stuff to Martin Tyler and Alan Smith.

In FIFA 23, EA stuck with the Derek Rae and Stewart Robson combo. Apologies in advance to Stewart, but he might be the worst co-comms man the series has ever had. Honestly, it sounds like the man is reading scripted dialogue from a teleprompter rather than talking naturally about events on-field.

Someone like Ally McCoist could be a shout next year.

Tyler's return would also feed into that Sky Sports vibe the developers go for when playing Premier League matches. It's regrettable that commentary feels rather stilted again this year. Gamers need more than Robson awkwardly spewing inaccurate lines like a robot.
