FIFA 23 Review: 8 Ups & 6 Downs

4. Penalties

There's more to come on generous set pieces changes in the 'Ups' section.

For now, just know that penalties are the nasty exception when it comes to heaping praise on EA's revamp. There doesn't seem to be any pre-run up indicator telling you whether or not your shot will actually be on target or not, and this is a huge problem that badly needs fixed.

EA's fresh system included plenty of info about calming player nerves, and the new circular reticule that pulses around the ball has potential, but some sort of directional pointer wouldn't go amiss. In fairness, it is possible to direct your shot when approaching the ball - the window is very tight though.

Some won't mind this. After all, penalties should be a nerve-racking experience, and even the world's best should feel the pressure as they step up to the spot. Again though, never properly knowing if you're going too far left or too far right is an issue that needs fixing.
