6. Edge (Final Fantasy IV)
As one of the few from the 2D era with a bit of depth to him, Edge from Final Fantasy IV is one of the most enduringly popular characters in the series. For most of the entries on this list, I have, as much as possible, tried to avoid characters that already have a great deal of backstory, whether in their original title or through sequels and such. With Edge, though, I feel there is yet more that he can offer, despite appearing in three games to date. Given his fighting style and appearance, Edge is a perfect fit for a Tenchu-style affair. In a somewhat more dark and gritty take on a character than, say, Yuffie's spin-off title, players would be tasked with carrying out assassinations, while trying to be as stealthy as possible. All manner of weapons, costumes and abilities would be available to skilled players, as well as a multitude of difficulty modes. This would be a great remedy to the disappointing Tenchu series, which always had massive potential, but was often let down by stiff controls and poor AI.
