As is the way with most MMO's, its success starts and ends with the people that flood its servers.
Lobbies of first person shooters are so frequently a wretched hive of scum and villainy, and frequent use of the mute button is the recommended course of action for such instances, but Final Fantasy XIV could not be further from what's found in the likes of Call of Duty and Battlefield's matchmaking facilities.
Be it Free Companies designed to create independent communities within the game, bringing a sense of companionship to the teamwork-reliant dungeons, or the structures in place like the mentor system as the hyper-friendly player base of Final Fantasy XIV makes it an immensely inviting experience.
That's not to say there aren't bad apples in the batch, however. That many concurrent players is certainly going to bring a few disagreeable douchebags, but most of them are off galivanting in areas exclusive to the expansions so are rarely an issue if you're just starting out.
Final Fantasy XIV is an exceptional experience if you want to brave the storm alone, but if social interaction is the flavour of the day, you're more than catered for with the friendly inhabitants of Eorzea.
