Final Fantasy: 25 Greatest Summons
11. Knights Of The Round
Be honest.
How
many of you beat Final Fantasy VII’s superbosses, Ruby Weapon and Emerald
Weapon, by constantly miming a W-Summon casting of Knights Of The Round?
Given the time investment in Chocobo rearing required to breed the golden chocobo needed to reach the hiding place of their summon materia, you could be forgiven for flat out abusing them to cheese through the rest of the game.
Based on the Arthurian legend of British mythology (an area that has been somewhat underserved by the series), the Knights attack thirteen times when called upon in combat, ignoring enemy defences. This was sufficient to one-shot all but a small handful of enemies and it’s no surprise that subsequent ‘ultimate’ summons were toned down from a devastation standpoint.
The Knights have not returned to the summoning fore since VII and have remained associated solely with that game as a result, a raid boss in XIV and the Kings of Lucis in XV being their only spiritual successors. Time will tell if and how they are incorporated into VII Remakegiven the vastly different combat and summon mechanics, but it’s certainly a sequence that would be breath-taking to behold with PS5 visuals.
